Indicted But Immune, Devyani Khobragade Leaves for India

WASHINGTON: The United States and India put a lid on a torrid monthlong diplomatic fiasco, agreeing on Thursday to remove controversial Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade from New York, without prosecuting her, despite a criminal indictment by US attorney Preet Bharara.

 

Khobragade had left for India, a statement by the ministry of external affairs confirmed, adding that she will be transferred to its headquarters in New Delhi, perhaps in a position that will allow UN-credentialed continued immunity.

 

The US state department on Thursday accorded Khobragade full diplomatic immunity after keeping New Delhi on tenterhooks for more than two weeks, but it did not stop Bharara from indicting her on two criminal charges of visa fraud and misrepresentation in a case involving her employment of an India-imported domestic assistant aka housekeeper in New York.
